Time to redo this video with updated roll and writes 🙂
Great list Richard, since you played Railroad Ink and Catrographers after this video, would they pencil their way into this list?
Rahdo, would this list change since you made it? I am looking to get our first roll-and-write, and I am considering Railroad Ink or Cartographers, or maybe Welcome to New Las Vegas. Any thoughts?
Need an updated roll and write favorites!!
Would Fleet: The Dice Game make this list?
CoB: TDG is really good. Very replayable, travel size and quick
Fleet Dice Game didnt make this list? Is that because it didnt exist when you did this vid? Fleet Dice looks interesting but I read a lot of complaints about it being hard to keep track of all the different things/rewards that you need to do, hence not an easy game to play. Get past the learning curve, play a few rounds then it may become easier but then you stop playing for a month and have to go thru thr pain of relearning it again. I dunno… And SteamRollers just looks too heavy… more of a complete board game that uses a pad to write on, not a roll&write in the sense of quick -play-lots-of-strategy-smaller table space
Ok Rahdo… I just placed order for Castles Burgendy and Roll Thru Ages Bronze Age… they look cool. (Considered Iron Age but looks too heavy). Fyi try Space Invaders Dice. AWESOME ROLL&Write
Have you played "Ganz schön Clever" yet? It looks like it is a really fun game
Steamrollers is msrp $49.95 and is, essentially, the free pnp 30 Rails.
What are some of the brilliant titles that you left off the list because of the "interaction" aspect of the games?
Where would Roll To The Top! fall, I wonder?
Hi Rahdo. Is there a chance that you are the Rahdo that used to publish sudoku&puzzles tournament schedules?
Great list of games, never tried , will defiantly try now :)))
Actually I played Comic Run: Rapid Fire an hour ago. Great game. ^^
Hey you mentioned at the beginning of this video you would go into more detail about the future of Roll & Write games in your podcast… which episode is that? I actually haven't listened to your podcast yet but I would love to listen to that episode
What about zooloretto dice game? 🙂
Personally love Noch Mal! But have you tried Sunflower Valley?
Thanks for this rahdo, great list!
What i would like to see is a roll & write that is kinda 7 wonders-ish, a middle weight family game with a similar theme, resource management with the same colourful art. I like the through the ages games, but they feel i little dry, and there's just something missing for me. Also i dont really like having to feed your people every turn.
So, i would like a roll & write 7 wonders, i have no idea how that would work, but i think the thought is cool. 😀
Zee Garcia recently did a review of a game called Let's Make a Bus Route. If you haven't looked at it yet, I would suggest checking the game out. It looks very similar to Avenue/Kokoro.
The Space Wars game you're talking about is called Conquer where I'm at in Malaysia. We use a grid based paper (used for Math class) to write the Xs and Os ^o^
I would have liked to see the boxes.
Can't wait to look into more of this list! We have played the Avenue games almost 50 times and we have already played On Tour 11 times. We love both games, obviously.
I also enjoyed your list and feel the same about Roll Through the Ages… all of these new designs are so good but there is just something about this "classic" that keeps me coming back.
If you get a chance you REALLY need to try Welcome to Dino World. It's a free print and play with artwork by Beth Sobel with great gameplay. Hopefully it will come up in your podcast later along with some other recommendations that I cannot wait to hear about (pssst, I need an exploration/adventure themed PnP roll and write)!
D100 Dungeon!
Welcome to? Sunflower Valley? Fleet dice game?
I have a theory on Rahdo's irrational obsession with theme (the fact that Ganz schön Clever doesn't even qualify for this list is irrational IMO). I believe there was tension early on between Rahdo and Tom Vasel on some games they disagreed on. Rhado would respond directly to Tom and try to convince him that if you tried hard enough, you could find sufficient amounts of theme in <insert abstract Euro game here>. I think Tom got in his head somehow and now Rhado has been fixated ever since to the point of needing to justify theme in every game he plays or else it's not enjoyable. Rhado- it's ok to acknowledge that some games (especially short dice rollers and classic card games) have no corresponding mechanical ties to reality and that you can enjoy them on an emotional level simply from the gameplay alone. We're here for you if you need support. 😉
Rahdo, you should try "Welcome" once it becomes available in the US! great roll and write with cards instead of dice
Must have theme? Sad to hear that. I hope you try Dice Stars, if you haven't. I got my girlfriend into Roll n Write games. She won't stop playing Castles of Burgundy the Dice game with me. Qwixx and Quinto are great, too.
For those who are interested, "On Tour" is currently on kickstarter. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1296268806/on-tour-a-strategic-roll-and-write-board-game/description
Steven Feld?
Ganz schön clever, Roll to the Top. Otherwise great list 🙂
Fantastic list. Steamrollers is an absolutely fantastic game. My addition to your list would be: “Welcome To:” another amazing game that uses a deck of cards as opposed to dice – but it features fantastic theming and gameplay alongside some really thematic art.
While not a true Roll and Write i think Roll Player could fit on this list… it adds some twists to roll and write but if feels like roll and write.
No abstract roll-n-writes makes this list very flimsy since some of the best have no theme (Qwinto, Ganz Schon, Kribbeln, etc.) .
Loving Rolling Japan, Penny Papers & Welcome to… and I'd like to try out Träxx as well.
Great list! The only one I would add is VivaJava: the Coffee Game: the Dice Game — stupid name, but fantastic roll-and-write game
I have SteamRollers and it's great, but I've been playing Lots of D100 Dungeon. Tons of theme and more than just roll some Dice and write the result.
Most roll n writes, I play once and I'm good for a few days. D100 is different. I can play this twice a day and be happy. Plus, the post game character management is really cool.
Excellent video as always 🙂 I have recently got a taste for roll and write games so perfect timing too… I would love to see a top 10 of P'n'P roll and write games if you ever fancied doing one. Keep up the good work
